Health and Safety Gone Mad?

Health and Safety rules are there for a reason, to keep everyone safe. Gone are the days when builders scaled scaffolding with no safety gear. Or when people lifted heavy loads with little regard to the damage it was doing to their backs.

There comes a point though, when H&S rules are taken so far that they start bordering on the realms of hilarity.

Remember that story from a few years ago about conkers being banned in school playgrounds? Turns out, it was just one isolated episode, and the ban is something the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has since derided as a myth.

If you thought that was crazy, wait till you hear this next one. A school in Essex has banned triangle-shaped flapjacks after a student allegedly got hit by one! Catering staff are now under instructions to serve only square or rectangle flapjacks. Now that does take the biscuit (pun not intended!) as far as health and safety corkers are concerned.

If you are looking for some more crazy health and safety rules, go ahead and check out this infographic by www.sheilds.org. There is a thing or two to make you chuckle.

Whatever happened to good old-fashioned common sense! Perhaps it is fear of lawsuits and hefty payouts, but H&S madness is here to stay.

Do you have any funny health and safety stories of your own? Why not share in the comments below so we can all have a giggle.

  1. I hate health and safety these days, it is just ridiculous. Everyone is scared of being sued

    1. That is so true, Kara. Common sense seems to have no place in this day and age of lawsuits.

  2. Health and Safety is basic common sense more of the time and I get annoyed with all these rules and notices x

    1. Me too! Some things need regulation, but not simple situations that can be resolved with good old common sense.
