Spring
Spring. A time when Nature throws back her cold, freezing blanket of frost, ice and snow. A time when new life springs forth. The dreary grey of winter replaced by the warmth of colour. When the days grow long and warm and the nights feel more welcome.
Spring. A time of rejuvenation and revival, of new beginnings. A time to cast off the old and weary. A time to change. When everything around is proclaiming a new dawn, a new awakening.
Spring Resolutions
Spring. There can be no better time to make new resolutions. Ones that are for keeps. The ones that promise to change your life for better, forever.
I made a bunch of these when I stepped out in 2014. But as in years gone by, most have been broken already not three months into the New Year. Most all bar a couple perhaps.
Why Resolutions Made on 1st January are Doomed for Failure (or why March should be the New January)
So why is it that resolutions made in January never seem to stick? I can think of a few good reasons why they are doomed for failure from the very outset:
Cue March and the official start to Spring. When everything turns bright, chirpy, cheerful and colourful. Little wonder then that you are more likely to persevere with any lifestyle changes you decide to make now. Spring is, after all, the time for projects and plans.
- Going cold turkey never seems to help. A month of excesses in the lead up to Christmas and New Year. Come the 1st, the resolutions kick in. So you give up everything that you were over-indulging in these last few weeks and expect a miracle.
- A month of festivities, bright lights, presents followed by complete and utter withdrawal of all things fun. For one, there is no money left for any more fun. Secondly, the dratted resolutions have kicked in.
- Lack of a bank balance is not the most optimistic start to any new project. Just compounds the problem multifold.
- The cold weather does nothing to brighten the mood.
- Nights that start at 4pm are not great either.
- It becomes very difficult to keep up spirits when everything around is dull, grey and cold. Especially when trying to overturn decades of lifestyle abuse.
- Giving up things you have loved for most of your life is never easy. More so when you are frozen to your bones, trying to scrape ice off your windscreen.
New Year in Spring
There are a good few cultures around the globe that celebrate New Year in the spring. Most tend to coincide with the spring equinox. Makes good sense in my book, really. The growing warmth of the sun, longer and brighter days, a riot of colour all around. The perfect setting to host a New Year's party. And to make some good resolutions that stick.
Yes, I'm so with you! March is a much better time for making resolutions and plans x
ReplyDeleteI do believe there is a greater probability that resolutions made in the spring are likely to stick.
DeleteMaking spring resolutions makes so much more sense! With the sun shining and the general feeling of everything feeling new and fresh, it makes more sense! x

I couldn't agree more, Michelle. Maybe it is time to buck the trend and start making resolutions in March.
DeleteI agree completely, I always feel that the spring is a fresh start too #ThePrompt
ReplyDeleteIt does make more sense in my head too. You can't tell your body not to crave chocolate when you have brain-freeze!
DeleteI completely agree too, far more sensible - sunshine, new plants, colour, longer days - all far more conducive to a positive outlook :) Great post! Thanks so much for linking to #ThePrompt x
ReplyDeleteThanks for the lovely prompt, Sara. Spring is just such a beautiful time of year. And the array of blooms, some of my favourites.
DeleteMarch is a brilliant time to make new plans and start afresh. Luckily this March the weather has been great - I got married in March and it snowed!
ReplyDeleteIt was snowing last year in March! Did not feel even a tiny bit like spring. Hope it is all better this year.
DeleteI think it is a great idea to start your resolutions in Spring rather than New Year! I can never stick to any in January - I will have to give it a try now instead!
ReplyDeleteI am so with you on this Vai! Although I might suggest April as the new year - I've always thought that it makes so much more sense that 'New' year should be a time when the world is actually full of new things (lambs, chicks, buds, colour...) #ThePrompt
ReplyDeleteMakes complete sense to me! Spring is the time for new beginnings.
ReplyDeleteI've never really thought about it before but you are so right, March is a much better time to start resolutions, you are much more likely to see them through than in the depths of winter! Fab #theprompt
ReplyDeleteI agree, a Spring clean for your life as well as your home.
ReplyDeleteSpring is one of my favourite times of the year, everything is new and changing and the colours come back into our lives :)

I think you are absolutely right. Spring is a much better time for new beginnings than January, I always feel like it is a new start!
ReplyDeleteI love the change of the seasons. I like to revisit plans each season. Once a year is not enough to keep me focused, but Spring is a big one. #ThePrompt
ReplyDeleteI agree, Spring is a far easier time to implement changes- especially those involving diet and fitness- that salad is so much more appealing when the sun is shining, as is the brisk walk!
