170 mile Cycle Ride - Training and Weight Loss (Week 6 Update)

I am at the end of week 6 of training for The Way Of The Roses and after missing all of week 5 to a nasty cold bug, I am glad to say this week has been a lot better. I managed an average speed of 21mph on a stationary bike at a level 9 tension. This session may have lasted only 25 minutes, but it is the fastest I have ever ridden on any kind of bicycle.

My on-going struggle with chronic sinusitis affects cycling performance. I have introduced kapalbhati pranayama into my morning routine in an attempt to overcome this. I am also practising mindfulness because the mind plays just as big a part in performance as physical training.

The second session of the week was another interval cadence session, but this one was at level 7. I was okay going at 80, 90 and 100 rpm, but I really felt the 110 in every cycling muscle! I persevered and did complete the routine without the need to go down a level or reduce cadence.

Chronic sinusitis has been the bane of my existence for far too long. My nose leaks continuously and although I have learned to live with it, that blocked nose affects my performance by reducing inspiratory capacity. The cold weather only makes matters worse.

Since it has worked in the past, I have re-introduced the practice of Kapalbhati Pranayama into my morning routine. It involves forceful exhalation using abdominal muscles. I hope it helps by clearing my sinuses so I can breathe easier when cycling.

I am also making an effort to keep up the practice of mindfulness – a technique I learned in an intensive 10 day residential course a while ago. I try to meditate either first thing in the morning or just before bed. It only takes 10 minutes, but it sets me up for the day ahead.

Training Update: Week 6

Gym bike – 1 h 15 minutes over 2 sessions (1 random speed, 1 interval cadence)
Outdoor cycle ride – No sessions

Diet:

Weight: 13 stone 5 pounds

A pound lost! It might not sound like much, but it is quite an achievement, especially after the excesses of a girls-only weekend away in Amsterdam.
That, coupled with compliments about my toned look and a drop in jeans size means something is working. I’ll take that, thank you. Until next week.

  1. You have done so well! I wish I can exercise like this. I still cycle now but not in training mode at all. I started getting back to yoga a few weeks ago and I found it very refreshing and now I can't live without it! Keep up the good work. Hope your cold will be rid off soon!
