The Dream

Watching Channel 4's documentary
On Donald J Trump
Couldn't help but think
What a complete and utter gump.

Tried to find the words
To express what I felt
Nothing made sense, but
Out popped a rhyme instead.

Flicking through the news
Everything looked rather grim
Here, there, everywhere,
Fights breaking out on a whim.

Distressing state of affairs
Unfolding on the world stage
Impending doom, looming crises,
In this return to The Dark Age.

And to think the dream was
To be a hard-nosed journalist
Looking for breaking news
And sniffing out juicy stories.

I write stories now
But of a totally different kind
Most involve parenting
And verses that don't rhyme.

Disclosure: These are my views and my views alone, expressed in a format that comes somewhat naturally to me. They do not reflect my political, economic, cultural, social or religious beliefs in any way, shape or form. The words written here are grounded in my unwavering faith in humanity and the doctrine of Live and Let Live.

An admiration of satire as an art form and an excessive indulgence in British humour may have influenced this piece.

  1. Great poem. I often have little rhymes come into my head but I never remember to jot them down. Todays world can be a little gloomy but I always try and look on the bright side.

  2. There's no better way than to express yourself in verse .... and as for your journalist dream, you are living it but from a different angle! Refreshing post! 😊👍

  3. Firstly, well done for even thinking about watching that man on your own television. There is no way I could have managed that.
    Lovely poem too.

    1. To be honest, I heard it more than watched it. I was crocheting at the time, so had my eyes on my yarn and my ears on Channel 4. Don't think I could have managed an hour watching him! Glad you liked the poem.

  4. Great poem and I refuse to watch anything on Channel 4 unless it is a film x

  5. Hehe Oh, this made me smile. I would love to be able to write poems like this but I don't ever seem to be able to finish them #prose4t

  6. Donald Trump - eurgh! Couldn't bring myself to watch that documentary as am already too worried by what I've seen of his campaign previously. Good on you for writing a poem - it's journalism of a different kind and I like a bit of non-rhyming! #prose4t

    1. Thanks, Maddy. It's amazing how strong emotion always makes me write poetry. From politics to sport to parenthood, there's always a non-rhyming verse ready to be written!

  7. That man actually scares me, too hateful for words. Great poem though, I tend to avoid much of the news now and focus on more fun things! The last verse made me chuckle, great way to end it :) #prose4t

    1. Thanks, Sara. I have pretty much given up on the news as well. But every once in a while you do catch something. And it stirs up strong emotion, sadly.

  8. "utter gump" Loved that. I'm glad you're writing stories of a different kind, ones that provide fresh air/oxygen rather than ones that pollute or suffocate. #whatI'mwriting.

  10. Brilliantly written Vai! I have to say that I am pleased I didn't go into journalism either - I think my views would be far more cynical and a lot less poetic! Thank you for linking to Prose for Thought x

  11. A very "spot on" poem for the times we are living through right now. xx

  12. I find myself getting very caught up in politics for various reasons, and I despair at some of the situations we are in with Trump (and others) having such influence... It can get really quite depressing at times, but thank you for giving me the chance to laugh at it all for once! :) xx

  13. I loved the last verse, like most of those who commented! As for Trump... Urgh. I barely watch the news now but twitter trends, articles friends send me and reading headlines over others' shoulders is enough to keep me informed enough on all the crap happening in the world. I try to balance with good news too - you might like this: http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/:)
