Mr Men My Complete Collection - A Review

I grew up reading the Mr Men and Little Miss books by Roger Hargreaves. I remember my Mother reading them aloud to me even before I could read for myself. And that was the beginning of a love affair with these adorable characters that has survived to this day.

I always wanted my little J to enjoy the Mr Men books as much as I did. So I was absolutely delighted when the marvellous folk at The Works offered to send me the Mr Men My Complete Collection to read and review.

I had bought the occasional few Mr Men books over the years as presents for little nephews and nieces. But I had no idea the series had grown to a phenomenal 47 books! So if you opt to purchase the Mr Men My Complete Collection, that is exactly what you will get. 47 books, each dedicated to an individual Mr Men character, all neatly packed in a large colourful cardboard box.

And yes, they still spell out 'my Mr. Men library' if you stack them up nicely in order. It is rather easy to  place them in order. Each book has a number on its spine, so all you do is follow the numbers from 1 to 47, and you have your books neatly lined up.

My Mr. Men Library
In effect, each of the Mr Men character has their own unique number. Mr Tickle is 1, Mr Bump is 6, Mr Chatterbox is 20 and so on. One end of the box and the back covers of each of the books show all the Mr Men with their allocated numbers. So you can point to a character and read aloud his name and number. "Mr Happy, 3!" "4 and 1, forty-one, Mr Grumble!" And then pull out that book from the box by looking at its spine.

A very handy tool if you, like me, have a pre-schooler who is just starting out on his numbers journey. Before the Mr Men Collection came along, J could go up to about 15. He still can't go beyond 20, but I love the fact that he has been introduced to 47.

Number games!
Now who would have thought the Mr Men books would help with numbers! A rather unexpected advantage of this Collection, but a very useful one all the same.

So once we have decided on which book to read, out it comes in all its brightly coloured glory. And then it is time to read. I often read aloud while J peers over my arm at the pages. Sometimes I trace the words with my finger as I go along. But recently, J is insisting on doing his own reading. He sits with a book, Mr Busy and Mr Tickle are particular favourites, and flicks through the pages while 'reading' to his teddy.

Reading a Mr Men book
At other times, he wants me to hold his little hand in mine, tracing the words with his little finger as we read Mr Bounce for the umpteenth time.

It just helps that the characters are so loveable. The personification of everyday habits and behaviour traits makes for endearing reading. What little kid would not want to know what Mr Mischief got up to! Or how loud Mr Noisy can be.

The illustrations can only be described as cute. Bright, colourful, cheerful and with simple clean lines, they could so easily be something a child could have drawn.

The Mr Men books are a perfect size. A couple can sit quite easily in my handbag or J's backpack and travel everywhere with us. Mr Happy and Mr Strong have even made the long journey to India and back. They are nice and compact, so great for bedtime reading too.

If you are thinking of introducing a little one to the wonderful world of reading, or if you are thinking of buying them a present, the Mr Men My Complete Collection will fit the bill perfectly. With 47 different stories to choose from their own little library, they will never be bored again.

You can buy the Mr Men My Complete Collection for £37.99 from The Works.
