Guilt-Tripping Through Parenthood

Does anyone else feel it too
Guilt-tripping through parenthood?
Trying to be the perfect parent
Hard work, when every moment
You fail
To live up to your expectations.
Agony, guilt, tears
For you, not them.

A screaming tot tugging at your knee
Ignored, as you cook a meal,
CBeebies on for an hour or two
As you catch your breath, a cup of tea,
Trying to read, write, network, socialise
Your tot, no input, playing by your side.

A struggle to brush teeth, cut hair, nappy change
Give in to tantrums or hold out?
For how long?

Anyone else feel it too
The strain of juggling home, tot, blog the lot?
Is it bad parenting or being human
Is there a fine line
That I can't see?
Is it just me?

  1. No, not just you, I feel like this most of the time! I was nodding along as I was reading. And also guilty because I also bring work home with me most nights that I should be doing.
I ask myself whether I'm a bad parent when I've stuck my son in front of the tele so I can have a brew, but at the same time try to tell myself that I need a few mins to have a breather. Then we can play again with a bit of renewed energy.

    1. It is hard though, when all you want is to do your best. Always. x

  2. I think we all are, really. Aren't we? It's how we strive for the best for our children :)

    1. So true, Vonnie. You want to give them your all, each time. Guess that what makes it so hard. x

  7. H aha - you have just described my life but I have given up the guilt trips, after all I am human too :-) and I am sure CBeebies help maintain peace in many households!

  8. It's not just you - I think guilt is in the smallprint of parenthood... or perhaps the largeprint! all very familiar!

  9. I think it's an endless juggle and an endless guilt trip. If I transformed into my notion of the 'perfect mother' - I'd go insane. I want to be a rounded role model for my children - and to do that I need to maintain an independent life. Fab poem x

    1. I know what you mean. They have to learn independence. It is impossible to be there 24/7, however much you want to.

  10. Guilt is proof that you are parenting right - that is what I have been told! I don't think they are wrong either. Great poem! Thanks for linking to Prose for Thought x

  11. It is definitely not just you! I think you wouldn't be a proper parent if you didn't feel like this at times. Thanks for sharing :-) x Char
