A Crafting We Will Go

I was recently reading a lovely blog post about alternative gift ideas by Maggy Woodley. She talks about a craft box as an alternative to traditional presents for kids aka toys.

Any sort of craft box is non-existent in the C household. I have bits and pieces strewn around the house, a ball of wool, some coloured paper, a glue stick, some threads and needles. We seem to have got by without one so far. We have made some paper flowers and even a sock monster.

But there has never been an organised effort to create something that resembles a craft box.

I vaguely remembered owning a pair of knitting needles and a couple of crochet hooks as well. I am clueless as to where they lie in the house at the moment.

That was the last straw. The obsessive compulsive organiser in me could not carry on functioning in this random manner.

So the weekend gone, I marched to the nearest craft supplier to stock up and organise our craft box.

Driven by J's magpie-like preference for anything shiny, I bought a huge supply of glitter glue, glitter paint, holographic stars, sparkly pom-poms, sequins, stick-on jewels and glittery shapes. Making the most of the October Christmas displays, I also picked up a couple of gold bead chains.

Our craft box
I bagged pipe cleaners, buttons, wooden lolly sticks, feathers, glue, scissors and a large assortment of paper.

Did I mention I also invested in a nice plastic craft storage box with sealable compartments?

Back home, I reclaimed an old wicker basket from the OH. In went my new craft supplies. In went the odd bits lying around the house - sticky tape, a few ribbons, bits of wool and thread. And a huge reel of gold ribbon.

And there we had it. Our super-organised craft box. J could not wait to get his hands on it.

I am sure we will have tons of fun creating with our newfound supplies. We will eventually look beyond 'shiny' and add other home-made, natural and recycled things to our box.

For now, a crafting we will go...

  3. Ooh, I do get jealous of people's neat and tidy looking craft box! I was like this once.....then over the years it ended up in total disarray and now covers the bottom of a cupboard! Mine are growing out of it now but always useful to have. Well done you :) #MMWBH

  8. we have several craft boxes in our house - most of them mine! The children do have lots of craft supplies too though :-) At Christmas, I gave my nephew a craft box instead of more toys. Unfortunately, he decided the scissors were perfect for trimming his baby sister's hair. Oops!
